Reflection
In this world and our society, the use of language and writing is very important. To be successful and accomplish many things in life you need communication. If we had no way of communicating with each other not a lot of work would have been done and all the history and things that happened wouldn’t have been recorded. All the great philosophers and writers would not have been heard and acknowledged.
In English 2010 I have used all of my knowledge and experience of English to put all my thoughts, memories, and opinions into my projects. With the use of writing and reading I was able to type my experiences and research onto a paper, so everyone can read it and understand my opinion on a certain matter the homeless people.
Rhetoric provides so many ways for you to follow guidelines and make something that everyone can read and understand. With the help of that I wrote a proposal and a research paper trying to explain why this topic is important to me and why this matters to the society that we are living in. For the proposal we had to write a memoir that was filled with my story and my experience on the topic. The art of language made me write a more touching memoir that was filled with many description words to able and put you into my situation and my shoes. I was using the guidelines of rhetoric to help me find the right thing to research and the right things to put into my paper to persuade people in the direction that I am looking in.
Lastly it is important to make your paper follow the right guidelines and making it flow so that the readers don’t get confused. Having the right structure of the paper so it makes sense and doesn’t confuse the reader. You want to sound knowledgeable and provide the knowledgeable evidence and the right information to support what you are saying. Without that people would not believe and be moved into the direction you are setting them on.
Project1Instructions:
Flash Memoir: Our first document encourages you to consider your personal motivations for choosing this social issue. In this short memoir, you will tell a personal story that connects you with this issue. Why is it important to you? What caused your interest in it? Does it come from your own experience? The experience of a friend or family member? Is it a fear? A hope? Show your reader why this topic means something to you and then connect it to the broader issue for your readers.
Topic Proposal: The second document of the project will be a formal proposal for research into your social issue. Using your own understanding as well as any insights you have gained from the field observation, you will propose several different lines of inquiry into this issue. What do you need more information about in order to fully understand the variety of perspectives surrounding this issue? What assumptions have you made that you may need to more fully explore? You will use this topic proposal in order to start your research when we begin Project 2.

Memoir
Downtown Salt Lake City you might be thinking of the Main Street or State Street when I mention it. It is where all the pubs and molls are for you to have drinks, go shopping and to have fun. Another thought that probably pops in your mind and it is the little pizzeria place called the Pie Hole where a lot of college students and pretty interesting people go to hang out, but this is not a story about that downtown is also the place when we go out passed those streets and explore the other side of downtown. Walking west passed Main street there are streets that are not lit with lights as much as the others, but there are streets that are filled with people even crowds of them and it is not to go and to have fun. It is the place where they live and make it their home. Downtown Salt Lake City is the place that holds the majority of the homeless population here where we live.
Going back to my High School years to when I just got my car was one of the most exciting times in my life because I didn’t have my parents driving me everywhere, and I had the freedom to take my friends out and go explore. Me and my friends started off with the east side of Salt Lake hitting all the cool abandoned places like the Old Mill. As a very adventurous group of people abandoned and old places excited us even though it was very dangerous and maybe that was another reason why. We were hitting all the hot spots we even researched to where we should go next. The time went by and we reached to the point where we were repeating and going to the same places, it was getting very old. An idea popped up in our heads to go downtown because that was the place to be looking for old abandoned factories and railroad tracks.
Friday after school that was all that we can think about like what cool places we can find instead we found something else. As we drove more and more around the west part of the downtown we were finding homeless people on every street. There were so many of them it scared me a little I am not going to lie about it.
We see homeless people all the time, but I am sure none of us really stopped and though about how their live are. Humans are very ignorant people sometimes and we forget to think about other people and their life stories. After all the adventures that I had with my friends, seeing the forts that people built and the tents that were set up everywhere as their homes I started to think more and more about the homeless. I was very curious how they manage to live.
In high school I started taking community of carrying classes that helped the people that were in need. Your grade mostly went off of how many hours you volunteered. We did many projects all the way from making three hundred sandwiches a month to help feed the hungry to volunteering at the soup kitchen which was the most memorable thing I have done in that class.
The soup kitchen is an amazing place for helping to feed hungry families who are in need. This place imprinted in me and I will never forget the little kids standing in line waiting for their turn to get the goods that we were serving. As a little group from our class we were all assigned certain job and all together with team work we were making the trays of food for the biggest line I have ever seen. I will never forget the smell of the food that I couldn’t get rid off for days after and the bread that was expired because it was so hard. I was very happy to be there helping but at the same time concerned and thought about how privileged I was just to have good healthy food at home.
Community of Carrying classes taught me that not everyone has it good and helped me consider other people in this world. Homelessness is a very big issue in the United States and all around the world and it is very important that we don’t forget about those people. All I am saying when you have to tell a little kid “I am sorry you cannot have seconds” because those are the rules or there won’t be enough for everyone it will never leave your body. In conclusion there is so much that we can do to help we just have to get up and act on it.

Proposal
The United States has a lot of social issues but the most important one to me is the homeless population. This issue has been around for many years and there have been organizations that have been helping many homeless individuals and families. For this research I want to look more into how this issue has been progressing, what are some of the things that have been done to solve this, and what have worked in the past and what did not.
Homelessness is a very important issue because there are so many families, young adults, and single individuals that are out on the streets. A large number of children struggle each day on the streets due to not having the privilege of getting an education, a roof over their heads, or a simple thing such as having food on the table such as others who do. It is even more difficult for the homeless that live in states that receive colder weather during the winter season because hundreds of causalities occur due to the freezing cold temperatures. This topic is very serious. because not that many people are very active in resolving this situation.
Overall the population of homelessness differs from state to state across the United States. Some states like California will have a higher growth rate to whereas Utah the population of the homeless decreases. For this research I want to look more into how the homeless are affected in different regions and how it is affects them in different ways to where they are. I would like to dig even deeper and go to the root of the problem and see what causes homelessness maybe if we start all the way from the beginning more ideas and solutions will open up in the end.
Many of the states experienced and reported a decrease in numbers of the homeless population. I want to look more into what they have been doing for the stats to go down and how has it been working for them. There are many organizations that have been involved with providing the help like variety of housing, service programs, and emergency shelters. In Community of Carrying class I had the chance to volunteer and interact with this hands on so I want to see what more communities can do help out those in need. Volunteering is very important to help these organizations succeed in what they are trying to achieve. As well as I really want to break down the population of the homeless into different groups like families, the youth, and individuals and what kind of different specific help has been provided for them.
After looking at all the data from the organizations I want to explore the idea of what has been working now and in the past and compare that data to what failed. From the information I am going to research I hope to find the answer to what can help the homeless even more. A lot of the homeless do have a lot of these resources available to them but not all of them use them and get the help in the right direction. I wonder why? What is it out there that people don’t want to receive that kind of help?
In the end I hope to see how all of this comes together and how we as a community can do better in this situation. Even though it is getting better in some states homelessness is still an issue that is out there that can get way better. In conclusion I hope this research paper will help me better understand homelessness, its causes, and it affects. I know there is a solution for making the lives of those in need better.
Project 2 Instruction:
In this project, you will return to the familiar academic essay form to write a paper detailing the conversations and controversies surrounding your topic as evidenced by a number of credible research sources. This combination of summary and synthesis is often called a “literature review” and can be found in many kinds of writing across academic and professional disciplines.

Through the Looking Glass
Let’s look at another world and part of our society that we are not too familiar with, the homeless community. One of the most popular social injustices that is out for argument would be helping the homeless families and the homeless individuals. There has always been argument between the communities and the government to where the help should come from and whether we should even devote our time to the social issue. A lot of people want to help the homeless but don’t want to do anything about the issue making it harder to accomplish in getting rid of the homeless population all together. Contrary thereare individuals in our society who think that homeless get overfed and think that they don’t even need or want our help.
There has always been a gap between people who want to help and actually putting in work and time to help the homeless. Many people do want to help but just don’t want to come too close to the issue. In the study made by Scott Clifford and Spencer Piston shows how many people do support homelessness policies providing aid or housing but have a “disgust” look on their community because they are still against sleeping in public and panhandling. Important questions rise up like should the homeless be supported or should their actions like panhandling and the need to find a safety be considered a criminal act? Should we the people help them or push them even further away from our society? (McBeth)
One of the very first arguments comes out from our local communities and the federal government. There are organizations like The National Coalition for the Homeless trying every day to continue the movement of ending the homelessness. Our communities have been fighting the homeless injustice since the beginning devoting the time all the way from volunteering and taking the time to come up with ideas to receive money from the government, different grants, and donations of any kind. All the money and the funding will be going into building new houses, providing shelter and food. In Utah Housing First initiative was able to decrease the homeless population by 91% proves that these organizations are very successful in what they do.
Contrary to all the organizations that are out there the government and some people believe that we cannot be putting more money into organizing the help for the homeless. The government believes that they already do everything that they can like providing so many programs including CoC (Continuum of Care Program), RHSP (Rural Housing Stability Assistance Program), and HUD-VASH (HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program). It is not only the programs there are many grants as well like helping to place the runaway youths, grants for the homeless individuals, health care for the homeless. From the perspective of our government they are very proud with what they have done.
Some people believe that we have been giving them too much as it is. So, if we start giving them more grants and “[increase] public support for policies that [will] make it difficult for the homeless to pull themselves out of poverty and get off the street” (Clifford and Piston). So, in giving them more we will actually will be harming the community. As one of the old poets said, “giving away all we have to the poor spells starvation to the poor”(Lawrence).Meaning he would not invest in a community that is already a disaster. Putting in more money into them will prevent them from trying to work at all. He though everyone here is to support the system and even said we need to “keep the form of life intact” (Lawrence).
Furthermore, to all of the help that is out there right now people believe that that is enough and the homeless do not need more help. All these funds and facilities have to come from somewhere and it is the United States budget. If we keep taking more and more away from the budget it will take away the money from the communities. This will prevent from having the money go to schools, road work, and many more government related facilities. Opposing to that “Studies have already shown that it costs a community far more to continue having folks living on the streets than it would to fund programs which could provide the means for their local homeless to achieve some measure of self-sustenance and, ultimately, housing of their own” (“Why Do Some People”).
This brings us to the last question what about the mentally ill, drug addicts, and alcoholics? Mental illness prevents from seeking the proper care and pushes away the guidance, caregivers, and even family. It causes people to neglect the necessary needs against the disease and further health care problems. “Homeless people often lack access to proper healthcare and sanitation, and they are often covered by the media in ways that refer to disease. As a result, they may be perceived as pathogen threats.” (McBeth) Some people see them just as that and are against helping the community. Even if we do try and help them they are very unlikely to achieve stability and remain off the streets
On the other side of the belief there are many homeless people with “severe mental illness are willing to accept treatment and services” (Nationalhomeless.org). It is not that they really don’t need it or want it, it is that there is lack of resources. Homeless need more resources that they can turn to if they are in need and as long as we don’t try and provide the right health care there will be many homeless who are viewed as the diseased. Yes, there will be people who will reject the help but those are the outliers in the community and we cannot just focus on them but the majority.
Furthermore, addiction to drugs and alcohol is a very important to evaluate to this argument. Many people believe that homeless individuals are addicts and they don’t want any help just as the mentally ill they just need more money for narcotics and alcohol. Which in some cases it is true but that’s only because they didn’t receive help sooner before the addiction just became untreatable. There are 38% of homeless people that are dependent on alcohol and 26% that abuse the drugs (“Housing.”).Even “a study published in Jama Internal Medicine indicates that drug overdose is becoming the most common cause of death among homeless people, surpassing HIV/AIDS” (Winter). So why should they be receiving more care when drugs and alcohol do the opposite?
Even with mental illness, addiction to drugs and alcohol they still need the proper help.
“But this is where the key concern lies: the lack of access to proper healthcare and sanitation is setting this group up for failure. By providing free or subsidized housing, as well as free clinics and healthcare facilities, many members of the homeless community could benefit and become active members of their communities again” (McBeth). Among the homeless there are teens struggling with drug addiction as well and prescription drug abuse is increasing and becoming more and more common. Everyone needs proper care for them to continue living, becoming stabilized in the community like getting a house and a job.
The issue is that finding affordable facilities or even the right facilities for the homeless is very hard because there are not so many out there. Trying to find help and avoid any legal problems is very stressful and makes the homeless to turn away from the right treatment. There are barriers to treatment since before you can even qualify for housing you need to pass a sobriety test and a drug test. As well as there are many shelters supported by the church and it is considered a sin for using drugs and alcohol. So, “instead of finding supportive treatment for a substance use disorder, many of them remain on the streets, sleeping in public places, jails, detox centers, or temporary homeless shelters” (Winter).
This social injustice has been around for a very long and even with people helping and decreasing the homeless populations that is still not enough to resolve the entire issue. Yes, there are some people who believe helping those who are in need will only ruin them even more but there have been studies and polls taken that homeless would rather get the help then be stuck in this unfortunate situation. Someone very wise once said “Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!” (Carroll). Meaning that if we are trying to continue the movement of helping the homeless communities we need to work even harder to get to where we want because for now we aren’t even close getting ridding of poverty.

Project Three
For this project I decided to do something different in persuading my audience to help the homeless population. I was thinking of many different things and ways to present my project going from pamphlets to posters that we went over in class English 2010. I recognized that I needed to go bigger and do something different. With this I researched a lot about how and why it is so difficult to find housing and with my future career as an architect an idea popped into my head to design an ideal house for everyone especially the government officials.
There have been so many projects out there that have been denied because they are too expensive and the government does not want to give money unless it is beneficial for all even them. The way I would be persuading my audience is through how cheap it is to build the house because it will be built out of the cheaper but still sturdy material to last a long time. With this they will be funding a project that does not cost too much and will be helping the homeless get back on their feet. It will explain how to them how this type of housing and design especially will help the homeless individuals and families.
Looking at the house footprint I designed the house looking like a college dorm. My thought was what a better way to fit more people and have them have access to everything as well. You will have a different key to get into the building and into your room as well as to keep their personal belongings safe. The house is designed in two sections and there are two different doors welcoming you to each one. The purpose is to separate single individuals and families so no one bothers the other. Single person section of the house will have rooms that are much smaller but will still have space to fit a desk for working processes and a dresser. They will have access to the kitchen area and the laundry room. For the bathrooms and showers I decided to keep the space and combine them together. A single room will have a toilet and a shower separated by a wall and a door so you can have the privacy and for the others to still use the restroom.
On the other side of the wall we will have the family section. Family section has access to everything as an individual homeless does but it is larger in quantities and bigger. I designed to have different rooms because there are different sizes of families. There are rooms that will fit up to 7 people at most. If you look there are a lot more bathrooms and showers so everyone doesn’t have to wait. With future additions to the project I want to add a second floor to the individual side to add more rooms for them. As well as adding access to computers and internet to help with advancing their futures like finding jobs.
With all this I want to set community rules so that everyone follows it and keeps each other happy. To keep staying at a place like this you do need to meet the requirements of finding a job and moving on in the future. With this project I would like to persuade the government officials and maybe other organizations to see how beneficial this is to the community and that it does not cost a lot of money. I want to persuade them into funding more projects like that making it a community and people helping each other.

In this project, you will return to the familiar academic essay form to write a paper detailing the conversations and controversies surrounding your topic as evidenced by a number of credible research sources. This combination of summary and synthesis is often called a “literature review” and can be found in many kinds of writing across academic and professional disciplines.
Evaluation Criteria:
- Physical Requirements: 1800 words in length. This paper must be typed, double-spaced, in 12 point Times New Roman font, and must have 1 inch top and bottom margins and 1 inch left and right margins. It should also make use of additional formatting conventions consistent with an academic style like MLA or APA.
- Your Rhetorical Situation: Consider your audience for this text to be reasonably intelligent, reasonably well-educated readers in an academic setting who have an interest in your topic but very little prior information about it. This means that you’ll need to explain the basics of your social issue in addition to the points of synthesis that you discover over the course of your research.
- Content: This paper should be an informative essay that brings together the information provided by your sources. Your goal is to identify patterns and trends in the arguments that people put forth regarding your topic, not to put forth an argument yourself. For example, you may find that there is one area of discussion that has three different common points of view. You may also find different areas of discussion that have no significant disagreements. This critical essay will focus mostly on the areas of disagreement in order to help you with potential areas of intervention for Project 3, but identifying areas of agreement can also be helpful in establishing places of common ground for both you and the reader. To help you in this process, we will be going over a method known as stasis in class.
- Structure and Cohesion: Like other academic papers that you have likely written, this paper is an essay. Essays must have a central thought that clearly and consistently guides the direction of the paper. In the case of this project, your central thought will be about the major issues being discussed by experts and professionals. With such complex ideas in this paper, it is especially important that you begin and conclude your paper effectively through framing paragraphs that help the reader to understand the overall organization and content of the essay. Your supporting ideas, in this case, each of the agreements/disagreements that you’ve identified, should be organized in a logical manner, progressing from point to point in a way that is easy for your audience to follow. Additionally, be sure that the individual parts of your essay are well connected and flow together appropriately through the use of effective cohesive language.
- Source Usage: Because this is a research essay, you are expected to integrate no fewer than TWELVE (12) credible sources of information. This requirement also means that you will need to find and consider many more sources than this before you decide upon the sources that will best serve your writing in this project. With these sources, you will need to consider the content and group them together in ways that demonstrate the ongoing conversations happening around your social issue. You will need to summarize, paraphrase, or directly quote these sources in order to effectively demonstrate how they come together to represent a variety of topics and points of view surrounding your social issue. Beyond the writing itself, you are also expected to correctly use an academic citation style that matches your formatting style, such as MLA or APA.
- Mechanics and Style: As with every project in this class, a certain degree of conformity to the dialect of Edited American English is expected. You are also expected to use a style that is clear, engaging, and rhetorically appropriate. Keep in mind that this document is still being written for academic purposes.

PROJECT 3 INSTRUCTIONS:
Rhetorical Intervention Evaluation Criteria:
- Physical Requirements: The formatting for this element of the project will depend entirely upon the genre that you choose to work with. The only physical requirement for this element of the project is that you must include both textual and visual elements of some kind.
- Your Rhetorical Situation: For this portion of the project, you must choose an audience to focus upon for your persuasion. The argument that you make, the audience that you choose, and the genre that you work with must all be both appropriate for your social issue and must also all work well together.
- Content: As with the other elements of this part of the project, the content will largely depend upon your choices of audience and genre; however, the goal of the content must be to persuade your intended audience of a particular idea related to your social issue. This idea could be to take up a position that they don’t have already, to consider a point of view that they may not have been exposed to already or that they may have discounted, to act in specific ways upon a position that they already hold, or any other goal appropriate to your audience and social issue. Regardless of what you choose as your rhetorical goal for this part of the project, the argument must be clear, well-supported, and appropriate for the audience and genre.
- Structure and Cohesion: As with the physical requirements, the structure of this portion of the project will be based upon the genre that you choose to work with. That being said, the general principles of coherence and cohesion still apply to any form of writing that you may do. The focus should be clear and consistent throughout the document, and the individual pieces of the composition should be clearly connected for a single, cohesive document. We’ll be talking about visual design principles during this project to aid you in creating coherence and cohesion in visual texts.
- Source Usage: No research is required for this project; however, most arguments that you may make about social issues will likely require some kind of expert support. Additionally, while all sources do need to be acknowledged, most public genres typically don’t make use of an academic citation style like MLA or APA. You’ll want to look at genre-specific conventions for referencing sources for whichever genre you choose.
- Mechanics and Style: As with every project in this class, a certain degree of conformity to the dialect of Edited American English is expected. That being said, depending up on your genre, some adaptations or exceptions to strict Edited American English may be appropriate. You’ll need to make these decisions as you research the conventions of the genre that you choose to work with. You should also consider how your writing style should shift for your audience as well, particularly in the areas of tone and formality.
- Physical Requirements: 600 words minimum. This paper must be typed, double-spaced, in 12 point Times New Roman font, and must have 1 inch top and bottom margins and 1 inch left and right margins. It should also use either MLA or APA formatting.
- Your Rhetorical Situation: For this report, you are writing a formal, professional report explaining the rhetorical choices that you made in the other part of this project. Much like the second project, your audience is both your classmates and your instructor. Make sure that your language and tone are appropriate to this situation. You may assume that your audience is familiar with your rhetorical intervention but will not have it in front of them.
- Content: This report should provide your reader with detailed information about the choices that you made in designing and constructing the rhetorical intervention portion of this project. This will, at minimum, include the audience, purpose, context, and genre that you’ve worked with. Other things that you may explain include which visual elements you’ve included, the research used to support your argument, the tone/formality/vocabulary, etc.
- Structure and Cohesion: While there are some differences between this assignment and Project 2, a professional report and an academic essay have a lot in common when it comes to organization. Effective reports must have a central thought that clearly and consistently guides the direction of the paper. Begin and conclude your review effectively through framing paragraphs that help the reader to understand the overall organization and content of the essay. Your supporting ideas should be organized in a logical manner, progressing from point to point in a way that is easy for your reader to follow. Additionally, be sure that the individual parts of your report are connected effectively and flow together through the use of effective cohesive language that helps your reader to see the connections between your ideas.
- Source Usage: No research is required for this part of the project; however, you do need to adequately reference the elements of your rhetorical intervention in order to demonstrate the choices that you’ve made.
- Mechanics and Style: As with every project in this class, a certain degree of conformity to the dialect of Edited American English is expected. You are also expected to use a style that is clear, engaging, and appropriate for your rhetorical situation.
